People hoarded their gold because a $20 gold coin was now worth more than $20 in gold. In 1919 it was now worth about $21. That’s why people began to hoard their gold. In my opinion MN08, this is in fact the real reason why it was confiscated. Another reason why I think not is because many other countries hold our currency in TBills or Cash Reserves. We certainly wouldn’t want to have to exchange our gold to others holding a worthless piece of paper. (Do we really have the gold we say we have?)
MN08….I really don’t think we have to worry about that. There’s much to understand about the Gold Confiscation in 1933. One was the fact that since the Federal Reserve came into existence in 1913 we began to see inflation. From 1833-1918 Gold only fluctuated 6 cents ($18.93-$18.99)in a span of 85 years. NO INFLATION. Once the FR began printing money, inflation occurred, and from 1918-1919 it’s value increased $1.00.
Hey WhyMeWhy Silver….I have a question. About a month ago, I finished the book How To Buy Gold and Silver, and invested most of my savings into silver. I put about 20% into gold, just to diversify…but have been reading lately that if the US was to go back to the gold standard, I am taking the risk of the government confiscating my gold…like they did in the 1930s. What are your thoughts?

Occassionaly, I’ll even have enough to buy a 10th oz gold coin, but normally I’m there for silver. I also have several antique shops where I can usually buy junk silver for cheap. Antique shops don’t change their prices very often, and if the people running it don’t keep up on precious metals prices, you can find some really really cheap stuff.
Hi veritasfiles, I think you’re right about people lacking being able to go to a local coin dealer. As for me, I can attest to the fact that I’m over 90 miles from the nearest coin shop. While visiting the VA in North Georgia. I became friends with a dealer there that will do business with me by mail. I buy only (uncirculated) foreign gold from him though. He charges me spot plus 5%. That’s better than I can buy it online. I agree with you. I bet you’re a good customer right? :>)
Well, I hope people take advantage of the offer. For myself, I can buy locally and anonymously from a coin shop where I can get silver for $3 to $5 over spot with no other charges. That’s good enough for me, but this sounds like a good deal too, particularly for those people who don’t have coin dealers locally. I’m guessing, but I think that most Americans probably don’t have a convenient place that they can physically go and pick up silver on a regular basis, so I hope they take this deal!
